Fondly Remembering Sr. Lizzy George 31 May 2024

Mathew 25:23 says, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness.”

Sister Lizzy George, a radiant beacon of divine love, has ascended to the heavenly realms to share her master’s happiness, leaving the virtue of her exemplary life and indelible mark of her grace and compassion upon our hearts. With a soul as pure as morning dew and a spirit as blemish less as the heavens, she devoted her life to the sacred service of humanity.

Sr. Lizzy George – God’s loving child was born in God’s own country – Kerala, Trichur Dt., at Ollur, to the pious couple Kunjuvareed and Thressiakutty on 12th September 1958. Her father was a business man and her mother was a home-maker. Sr. Lizzy was a second among eight children. She completed her schooling at St. Raphael’s High School, Ollur and her pre-degree at St. Mary’s College, Trichur.

Being the second eldest daughter at home, from the age of 10, she took great care of her family. She helped her mother in running errands outside, looking after her younger brothers and sisters and doing house-hold chores.  Born into a pious family, Sr. Lizzy was blessed to relish Christ since her childhood.  Her uncle was a Salesian Priest and her aunts were missionary nuns. The daily family rituals such as prayers, mass and catechism were nourishments for her spiritual growth as a school student. She looked forward eagerly for the home-visit of her religious aunties and priest uncle because their presence for 15 days at home was considered as a time of special grace for the God-fearing family. Sr. Lizzy’s childhood was blessed in every way.

Her calling was as early as in the 8th standard.  One Wednesday after-noon, when she came home for lunch, she saw her mother carrying an old beggar in her arms into the main hall, as he had fainted in front of the house. She ensured that the man was fine by sprinkling water, giving him coffee and arranged a taxi for him to get home safely. Infact, he was a rich man and the father of 6 boys but was chased out of his house by his daughters-in-law. Sr. Lizzy’s mother considered the beggars’ arrival as the visit of Jesus to the home and ensured that especially on Wednesdays many beggars were given alms at her home. This inspired Sr. Lizzy with a question in her; that if a house-wife could do so much, how much more could a religious person do? It was at that moment that Sr. Lizzy decided to become a missionary.

Inspite of her mother’s disapproval of her decision, it was with the support of her dad, her grandmother together with her priest uncle and religious aunties that she completed her higher studies. Before joining the convent, sister completed her B.A., English Literature in 1983 from Holy Cross College, Tiruchirapalli and B.Ed. in 1985 from Stella Matituna College, Chennai. It is interesting to note that in all her three years of her stay as a student at Holy Cross College hostel she never missed even a single mass as she firmly believed that attending the Eucharistic celebration gave her renewed vigour and vitality to further serve our Lord Jesus.

She wanted to join the FMM congregation, but moved by the kindness of the sisters of the cross and the hospitability her priest uncle received whenever he visited her as a student in the college hostel campus, she decided to join the Holy Cross Congregation. Sister has many a times mentioned that “I am happy about my choice and I thank my God immensely”. Thus, her chosen journey of purpose began with the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod, Province of Tiruchirapalli.

June 1985 marked her entrance to Pre-Novitiate at Cantonment, Trichy and in June 1986 she joined the Novitiate at Puthur, Trichy where she made her first profession at Puthur, Trichy on 31st May 1988 – this same day 36 years ago.  Today is a witness that at every phase she truly led a Christ- driven life and will continue to inspire us as a spiritually anchored and deeply God fearing person. Since her final profession on 28th May 1996, she has kept herself extremely busy by pursuing higher studies in French.

Between the years 1988 to 1997, Sister served as an English teacher, a history teacher and as a boarding mistress in Little Flower High School, Guntur; St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School-Vadugarpet; Holy Cross Matriculation School, Vellore and St. Joseph’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, Cantonment.

As an obliging young nun without hesitation Sister ventured into a newer horizon that sooner became her forte of expertise. In 1995, she joined M.A French at Madurai Kamaraj University and later in 2007 completed M.Phil in French from the same University.

Sister Lizzy is most renowned for her valuable service as a dedicated teacher of the French tongue, whose passion and wisdom in the lessons taught by her, transported her students to the French shores. Teaching French since 1997, every nuanced phrase of hers was a joy and every new word was a delight to her spell bound students. For more than two decades, Sr. Lizzy has kindled among hundreds of students, a lifelong, fervent blaze of love for the fantastic French language and culture anew. As the Head of the Department of French, she instilled in young minds the virtues of self-discipline and resilience. Being a strict disciplinarian herself in both personal and professional life, she practiced what she preached. Sister has carved a niche for herself in the portals of the history of annals of Holy Cross College by the dint of her persistent diligence. She also proved her mettle as the Vice Principal from 2014 to 2018 and had also extended her motherly care to the hostel students as a warden since 1999, on and off till 2009.

While heading the Department of French, Sr. Lizzy George also took up the post of Controller of Examinations from June 2013 to 2014. After a short break she resumed the position in 2017 after which she retired. Yet, sister has continued to serve as the Controller of Examinations till her very last day. Her punctuality was a testament to her respect for time and commitment, reflecting her remarkable dedication that inspired all her colleagues in the Controller’s Office all around her. During her tenure as a Controller of Examinations she was extremely sincere and highly meticulous in her work giving her undivided attention to every single detail, as she felt that even the smallest mistake could adversely affect a student’s life.

Generosity and graciousness were the chief features of her charming persona. Sr. Lizzy was a very patient listener to all the distresses of the workers in the campus. She would not just lend a sympathetic ear but also an empathetic hand to all those who approached her for any help, be it material or spiritual. Her fondness for the adopted children whom she lived with during her stay at Mambalasalai from 2004 to 2015 was seen even long after she was transferred to the Fort community. She used to visit them often and shower them with her motherly affection. There was always a subtle humour she had in her daily conversations and child-like wonder to appreciate simple things. Deeply humane, considerate, simple and prayerful, Sister Lizzy George’s mild nature, clothed in humility, brought forth a gentle breeze of kindness in a world of chaos.

Sr. Lizzy had a fall on the fateful day of 8th May after which her health took a hit. She was given immediate treatment at GVN hospital, Trichy and she was seemingly recuperating. But, then when she took ill again she was taken to Leonard Hospital, Batlagund on the 11th of May where the Sisters of the Cross of Batlagund Community, Province of Madurai had taken good care of her. On 13th May she was transferred to Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Madurai for further medical attention. But, even after 8 days of sterling medical attention there was no visible improvement in her condition. On 22nd May she was brought back to Leonard Hospital, Batlagund where Sr. Lizzy briefly responded to the loving care of the Doctor sisters and care takers. But, unfortunately on 30th her health deteriorated rapidly and in consultation with the Province Animator, it was decided to bring her home to the Fort Community. On her way to Trichy in the ambulance on 30th May around 7:10 a.m. her soul left for its heavenly abode to meet its Maker again. Even though her soul has left the earthly realm, we take comfort in knowing that her soul is now embraced by God’s unconditional love in the heavenly Kingdom.

Sister Lizzy George – YOU- practiced the virtues of poverty and simplicity with unparalleled poise till the end of your life. As a teacher who inspired, a trustworthy friend to be cherished, a role model for your colleagues and a living saint to those who knew you well. Sr Lizzy George, you will always hold a special place in all our hearts just as you hold a special place in heaven now before God whom you served so obediently.

We bid you an affectionate adieu dear Sr. Lizy and assure you that we will miss you till we meet in heaven.

Your loving Sisters of Nazareth Community,

Fort, Tiruchirapalli.

Eulogy of Sr.Roseline Pampackal

Farewell to our dear Sr. Rosaline

Happy are those who die in the Lord, happy indeed the Spirit says, “Now they can rest forever after their work, since their good deeds go with them”. Rev. 4:23.

Fortunate are we who are present here to attend the funeral service of a saintly person. Like the gentle glow of the setting sun, Sr. Rosaline departed softly, silently and effortlessly around 9.30 am, Yesterday (03.03.2023). She attended the Holy Mass in the morning, received the Lord whose presence she always cherished, her last words to Sr,Regina Mary was ‘I am going to pray, you pray for me’ and she went to her room and around 9.30am in her sleep she passed away, this shows what Sr. Rosaline is.

There was great Joy and excitement on 21st September 1932 in the family of Mr. Mathew Pampackal and Mrs. Mariamma, as they welcomed their first born at Palai, Kerala. They had 10 children, 4 boys and 6 girls. Her parents were very pious and instilled the fear of God in their children. Family prayers in the morning and evening and the daily Eucharist nourished their lives.

Her Primary education was at Little Flower School owned by CMC Sisters at Mundankal. Middle and High School was with the F.C.C. Sisters. After the completion of her S.S.L.C. Examination, Sr. Rosaline joined the Band of the Sisters of the Cross, through the instrumentality of her Aunt, late Sr. Marie Celine. Younger Sisters Sr. Claris and Sr. Macarias joined the CMC Congregation. These two Sisters went before their eldest Sr. Rosaline to welcome her to sing the praises of God for all eternity.

Today, we take time to salute Sr. Rosaline for her contribution to the Growth of the Congregation and the communities that she lived in. Sr. Rosaline entered Postulancy in 1953 and pronounced her First Vows in 1956 and Final in 1959.

Inter Cultural Living and Managing Diversity in Consecrated Life

Multiculturalism in practice is simply an expression of God’s creativity. We are called unconditionally to embrace the differences among us. A two day session on Inter Cultural Living and Managing Diversity in Consecrated life was organized for the sisters in the Province of Trichy on 3rd and 5th June 2022 at Fort by Rev. Bro. Dr. Paulraj SG. Montfort Brother of St. Gabriel. He is the Principal of Vidhya Deep College, Bangalore. Refocusing SCC towards a relevant Consecrated Life, focusing on the strength of the Province and appreciative inquiry, Difference is expected, respected and encouraged so that every sister can be productive, innovative and achieve to their fullest potential were dealt on the first day.

The inspirational capsules:
  • Charism based renewal, Redesigning the formation, Learning from our history, Transparency and accountability.
  • Centre your life on Christ, Centre your mission on poor, Return to your Charism.
To Ponder:
  • Every one smiles in the same way, why not same language?
  • Do we carry the structures or the structures carry us?
  • What am I doing that my Province would like me to do more of or less of?
Questions for group discussions:
  • Share about the culture of SCC Congregation. According to you what were the main aspects of the culture around which your Congregation emerged and grew up?
  • What is our Congregation culture? Define its different characteristics?
  • How is our Congregational culture being expressed concretely in the day today life of our sisters in the communities and in the Province of Trichy?

Multiculturalism doesn’t mean numerical but encouraging together and giving space for everyone. All of us are born into a particular culture. We are culturally embedded. Every culture is internally plural.

Need for Inter Cultural Living in Consecrated life:

Sense of belonging based on shared commitment. Commitment to the integrity and wellbeing. Attachment is the root cause for everything. All the members of the province must feel wanted, significant and secure. Differences that are nurtured lead to diversity and diversity that is celebrated is the spring board for creative change within our lives. Follow up actions were drawn for personal, community and at Province level. These two days session was enlightening, inspiring and helped us for our Inter Cultural Living and Managing Diversity in Consecrated Life

Eulogy of Sr Ancilla

Farewell to our dear Sr. Ancilla Augustine

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you and
before you were born I consecrated you” Jer 1: 5

Sr Ancilla was privileged to receive the call of God and offered herself whole heartedly to the Lord as she was born on 2nd Feb 1928, the day of the Presentation of the Lord, in Thrissur, Kerala for the pious parents Mr. Augustine Vanathu Perampil and Mrs. Elizabeth Challissery. She was the eldest among the three boys and three girls. Though her maiden name was Mary Augustine, she was affectionately called as Baby.

The day of her first Holy Communion and confirmation at the age of 7, in the capuchin monastery was the happiest and unforgettable day in her life. While she was doing High School, she was very much taken up by the kindness and gentleness of Sr. Emilie SCC, her cousin who came for holidays and was her inspiration to join our congregation, as per her wish to be far away from home as a missionary. As a young girl, she used to visit her cousin sisters, Srs. Emily, Josephine, Cecile, Aloysia and Sr. Eusubius who were the members of our congregation. Once when she and her father happened to meet Mother Sophie, she also motivated her to join the congregation.

Being confirmed of God’s call to this congregation, sister Ancilla came to Fort in 1950 along with Srs. Jecintha and Cecile. She entered the pre-novitiate on 2nd July 1950, novitiate in 1951 and made her first profession on 4th Jan. 1953 at Amravati. She committed herself totally to the Lord and offered her life on 4th Jan 1956 in Fort, Trichy.

From 1953 to 1977 Sister was at Fort community fulfilling the responsibilities of being in-charge of Mess, Parlour and School Office. She was sent as a student in 1977 by Mother Marie Cecile for Sudeep Course at Bangalore.

From 1977 – 78 sister was in Novitiate community working in Government Hospital. From 1978 – 83 she was accomplishing the task joyfully as Needle work mistress, in-charge of Creche and Chapel at Cantonment. After finishing a year of training at Mambalasalai, she continued her mission as Needle work mistress in Kallakudi, Oddanchathram and Nellore from 1983 to 1994. The poor and the needy found place in her heart as she was fortunate to spend most of her time as Needle work Mistress. She chose to be humble and hidden like our Mother Foundress.

Sister had a charming and angelic look and was lovingly called as ‘Fairy’ by everyone. Many young girls who were attracted by her wanted to join the Congregation. She radiated God’s love by instructing them to read Bible and share her experiences. She was kind, gentle, prayerful, sacrificing, not seeking to be someone but identifying with the suffering servant of God. She led a simple and cheerful life.

In 1993, as the sisters were going for mass in Nellore, a lorry dashed on the vehicle. The Jeep rolled twice and sister lost her right arm in the accident. Sr Ancilla has written in her Biography that “This accident gave a turning point in my life. My pride came down because I had an independent nature. Now I began to depend on others for my needs.”

After her treatment she continued to serve in the community at Madras taking care of the chapel and parlour joyfully. She returned to Cantonment in 1998 and continued her mission as prayer warrior till 2010. Her soft voice and her gentleness revealed her constant communion with the Lord.

In 2010 Sister was diagnosed for cancer of the breast and underwent mastectomy after which she was shifted to Fort community. From then onwards she became very active in her apostolate of prayer interceding for the community, congregation, church and the world at large. In September 2021 Sister had a fall and underwent surgery which made her confined to her bed. Though she underwent a lot of physical sufferings, not a word of complaint escaped her lips. Instead, she united herself with the crucified Lord, living the paschal mystery. A flower does not force itself to exude its fragrance. Likewise, our beloved sr. Ancilla, naturally exuded God’s love and mercy to all those who came in contact with her especially the poor people. She was quite contented, full of gratitude, peaceful and asking Jesus to give her the grace to accept His plan till she breathes her last.

Having lived 69 years of fullness in the Lord as an ardent follower of Jesus Christ her Master. She was always ready to meet her spouse in heaven as early as possible. Whenever the sisters went to meet her, she used to say “I am ready to go to heaven” Her preparedness to meet the Lord was a great inspiration to all of us. Her love and devotion for the Blessed Mother was visible and edifying when we saw her, promptly reciting the rosary loud even at her death bed.

Jesus was well pleased with the simple and unassuming life of our dear Sr. Ancilla and received her soul as she surrendered it in the presence of the whole community, after receiving the Holy communion at 8am on 13th Jan 2022 after living 94 years on earth.

Our beloved Sister Ancilla you were a joyful and exemplary religious who sought only God’s love and attached to things that are of God and not of the world. We miss you dear sister, your company, prayerful support and encouraging words. Your life has touched each one of us and has left an imprint in us to be grateful and happy. As you have fought the good fight and finished the race kept the faith, may the Good God reward all your sacrifices on earth and grant you eternal bliss. We bid you farewell dear sister, till we meet again in heaven.

May the angels go with you, To the home of God’s glory
May the saints bid you welcome, To the land of the living.

Your loving sisters of Fort community,
Province of Tiruchirappalli.

Oration – Sr.Miriam Therese

Farewell to our Dear Sr. Miriam Therese

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith From now on there is reserved for me, the Crown of righteousness Which the Lord the righteous judge, will give me on that day “. 2 Tim. 4:7-8

Sr. Miriam Therese was born as the third child to Mr. Antonisamy and Mrs. Arpudamary on 27th February 1938 into the family of deep faith in God and love for humanity at Varaganeri, Tiruchirappalli. Sr. Miriam was loved, petted and cared by her family and was very precious to her brothers and sisters. She was a loving, affectionate daughter and sister. She was good at studies and her father, who was a teacher used to invite the less privileged children of the locality to his home in order to assist them in their studies. This made her more responsible in her behaviour towards others in society and helped the students in their studies. She also helped her mother to make some edibles for those children, who would have starved at home.

Her parents were pious and faithful Catholics who brought up their children with strict discipline and with strong religious consciousness. Sr. Miriam used to go for daily mass and loved reading the lives of saints specially the life history of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, Blessed Alphonse and St. Francis Xavier. She was inspired by their heroic Spirit, dedication and sacrifices they made in their lives. Her longing to join the Great Carmel order was bluntly refused by her Father but with much struggle she got permission to join Sisters of the Cross in June 1958 where she studied, with five other companions. She had a feeling that she was loved much at home as well as by her Novice Mistress Mother Theophine. She took life very seriously and made her First commitment on 21st December 1960. Her first community was Fort, started to work in the office, co-coordinating, unifying and even rectifying things with the help of senior sisters. There she learnt to keep up confidence and help the senior sisters, specially the sick and ailing members. She had the gift of relating with different people amicably and had learnt the art of silence.

In the year 1969, she was enrolled as a student of Commerce in a Hindu college at Nagercoil. She had secured a Gold Medal in Commerce. Then she worked as an Assistant Superior and Bursar at Mater Dei, Goa for three years. She was spiritually enriched by the courses attended to serve the Lord joyfully and fruitfully. After this she was appointed as Province Bursar and in charge of the Technical Institute at Mambalasalai. Later she took charge of the community at Fort from 1979 to 1982. Simultaneously she completed her Master of Commerce in Venkateswara University, Tirupathi in the distant mode of education.

Deeper study of our Origin and charism made her serve the poor in a village set up at Vadugarpet in 1982 to 1992. While working in the school she completed her B.Ed. in Annamalai University in the distant mode of education. She worked in Vadugarpet School for 5 years later she joined the Community at Kallakudi visiting the villages in the neighborhood and giving non-formal education in tuition centers, after her class. From 1989 to 1990 she lived in the village called Pudur – near Kulithalai and was engaged in evangelization and social work.

After her retirement from 1997 to 2000 she was in Novitiate as Sister- in- Charge to re-live and share her youthful spirit with others. From 2000 to 2002, she was Sister -in- Charge of the community at Golden Rock and 2002 to 2004 she was the Sister-in-Charge of Oliyamangam community. From 2004 to 2007, she was in charge of Diocesan Nursery School – Christ the King Matriculation School, at Namakkal and from 2007 onwards she took care of the neglected and deserted women in Shanthi Villa, Destitute Home at Amaithi Nilayam community.

For 14 years till her death, she had been the Director of the Destitute Home – caring and sharing her entire self with the neglected women of our society. Due to vomiting blood, breathlessness and distended abdomen, she was taken to Child Jesus Hospital and got admitted on 18th July 2021. As she was having some internal bleeding and low HB, she was administered one unit of blood but still they could not stop the bleeding therefore she was shifted to GVN Hospital at Mambalasalai, Trichy on 21st July 2021. From then onwards she was administered three units of blood, diagnosis was going on, after doing the endoscopy treatment she was diagnosed to have cirrhosis of the Liver (grade 3 ) subsequently leading to Ascities, portal hypertension and esophageal varices causing Haematemesis and Malena and stomach was getting distended.

After her persistent request, she was discharged from the hospital, on 1st August 2021. She was brought back to Shanthi Villa, Amathi Nilayam. She was with the sisters and the inmates for two days and three nights. After coming to Shanthivilla, she visited all the inmates individually, prayed and blessed them. She handed over all her responsibilities diligently to Sr. Lourdu Adaikalasamy, the newly elected Provincial. On 3rd August 2021, during the evening prayer, all the sisters were gathered around her and she expressed her gratitude to the members of the community and blessed them.

On 4th August 2021, from 2.00 pm onwards her health was deteriorating, she had severe breathlessness, her pulse was slowing down and community members were present to attend to her needs. The end came swiftly and painfully but she could no longer voice her feelings, the Lord alone, whom she faithfully served, could understand her as she breathed her last at 3.00 pm. Till the end of her life, she was very grateful to the Congregation, Province and all the sisters who had guided her towards reaching her goal to follow the crucified Lord.

Always her wish and prayers were authentic and true to her belief. Her love for the poor and the destitute, the less privileged were praise worthy. She never complained about struggles of life but lovingly accepted all the challenges and used it as an opportunity to glorify God. The routine task she performed never led her to boredom or frustration; she was always attuned to the signs of the time and was prompt in responding to it creatively.

Dear Sr. Miriam you have touched our hearts and left a legacy of your hard work, determination and loyalty to the Congregation. Farewell to you dear Sister Miriam, enjoy the eternal bliss with the entire Celestial Court. The great and mighty souls will definitely inherit the kingdom of God and we firmly believe that you are counted one among them.

Good bye to you dear Sister Miriam till we meet again in heaven.
