Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas’ longtime companion, later married former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy
Scenario
Maria Callas, the world’s greatest opera singer, experiences the final days of her life in 1970s Paris as she comes to terms with her identity and life. Kennedy was the subject of an earlier biography by Pablo Laraine, 2016’s Jackie, starring Natalie Portman. Maria Callas: Reserve me a table at a cafe where the waiters know who I am.
I’m in a bragging mood
Featured in Close-Up: Why Do We Need the Venice Film Festival? (2024). I just saw the film at a film festival.
Our entire group was disappointed by what we saw
The plot was thin for us, focusing on the last part of her life, leaving out large parts of the story of how events are linked together. We moved from one scene to the next with no clear connection between sequences. The focus seemed to be on Jolie posing for us, in contrast to the charm of the real Maria.
There was a gap in this version of Maria Callas
I get it – Angelina is beautiful, but where did the spark come from? I never felt connected to the characters or interested in the film. At the end of the film, when the credits roll, there are scenes of the real Maria Callas – full of personality and charisma – that are unfortunately not represented in Jolie’s portrayal.
Beautiful costume designs, but that’s about it
