An up-and-coming chef and a recent divorcee find their lives changed forever when a chance encounter brings them together in a deeply moving, decade-long romance. When Florence Pugh was unable to attend the film’s premiere due to other filming commitments, Andrew Garfield brought a life-size cutout of her to fill in for her absence. This show has a lot going for it. A fantastic, out-of-this-world cast. Beautiful destination filming locations. The two leads have fantastic chemistry. I mean, fantastic. It’s a love story set in the 20th century (weird and desired). The dialogue is really sweet and consistently smile-inducing. There are even a few good laughs here! Andrew Garlfield’s character is especially great. Although… his character may be great because I feel so much sympathy for the guy. Like the sympathy one feels for the abused dogs in Sarah McLaughlin commercials. Why? Because Florence Pugh’s character steps all over this dear holy man. Florence Pugh’s character takes over as the protagonist in the film. The film’s fatal flaw is that it makes you hate her. Any emotion I should have felt was washed away with biting dislike and head-scratching confusion about the writing decisions made. The film starts off strong but heads in a bitter and emotionless direction. Even the film’s central message is overshadowed by the poor writing that gets it there. Everyone was seen leaving the theater extremely dissatisfied.
