"You Will Return" is a very original film whose characters do not want to make a fuss about their separation, so they decide to take the opposite action and throw a joyful divorce party on the very first day of autumn. The film stars a revolutionary. Take a couple that changes the customs, habits and stereotypes of separation, showing a modern, peaceful and non-conflict relationship between two middle-aged people who simply seek happiness. It is a film about uncertainty, about being a couple after 15 years of relationship, about the midlife crisis and the doubts it raises. The film also presents thoughts of various shades about many things, such as love, friendship and family relationships. Complex thinking is summarized in one simple sentence: “Volveréis”; like the statement: "Really, you will get back together" OR the same sentence but with a question mark: “Volveréis”? Like "Will you get back together?". Two assessments of the same reality. Like the verb "volver" which has two meanings: to turn (page, leaf) or to return (to go back). There are many references to Bergman, to Truffaut, but also winks to the director’s father (Fernando Trueba, a famous director himself), who is the main character of this film, because it was he who had the original idea to celebrate the separation! In a way, Ferando Trueba is the father of the constantly contested idea that led his son (Jonas) to make the film. I find this film very moving because it is not only very personal, as we have just seen, but it is also very sincere. A very sincere way of dealing with a midlife crisis and a couple crisis, or the way Jonàs Trueba shares his doubts throughout the film. There is a kind of circle of repetition, a circle of life or a vicious circle, so to speak, and somehow as the film progresses we begin to doubt whether this is a good idea or not, whether the editing will reveal to us that it is fiction after all. Jonàs Trueba plays with us as much as he is sincere. For example, it seems that the director shares his doubts about the editing and relevance of his film (the film that we, the audience, are watching!) by sharing with the main characters' doubts about their fate as a couple or individuals due to the editing of THEIR film that they are both trying to end… as well as their relationship that is ending! This film is special because it is witty. It is a hymn to dialogue, to love, to respect. The main characters hardly argue or argue. It is a very modern approach of a couple, very contradictory. The two simply shared their thoughts sincerely. They somehow love each other in every step of their thinking, despite the doubts that arise everywhere, with a look, a word or a glance. To the question: are you happy? One answers yes, the other no, but both seem to regret their answer as soon as they say it. This melancholic tone fits with the turning point in their lives, with what they are going through, because they have to turn a new leaf, start a new chapter, start a new season just like this rather sad, unclear and ending summer in Madrid. Little by little and thanks to the characters' personal journey, we understand that life is like a film montage, and everything can turn upside down: a beginning can become an end, a supposed end can mean a new beginning, and once you decide, everything can be different. around again. A beautiful, witty film with many winks. I highly recommend it!
